A Love Affair...

As I have mentioned before, I am a huge fan of Stephen Fry. I finally watched "Peter's Friends" tonight, and I admit that I rather enjoyed it. Yes it is really just an English version of "The Big Chill", but I think I actually enjoyed "Peter's Friends" more. Perhaps that is just my own bias when it comes to Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (a combination that never goes wrong), but all together I much preferred the cast, and the story. Normally I do not think highly of remakes or just general re-using of good ideas, and I also have a tendency to generalise about the Americans always having to try to make a great British show their way (Red Dwarf, Coupling, Life On Mars, Queer as Folk - the latter, admittedly was brilliant - to name a few) I did not mind the British re-using a tried and tested American Idea. Maybe I just like their humour, their acting styles, and the general British-ness better, but whatever it is, it works.

Not all remakes or re-usages are worse... take "An Affair To Remember" for instance; we tend to remember that reworking rather than the 1939 original, "Love Affair."

same thing with song covers... sometimes the remakes are even better! (anything tori covers is usually better or at least as good as the original!)
