So, after more and more feedback, it seems I do not have enough experience. This is something that has irritated me for a long time about getting a job. They always say "experience! experience! experience!" But if no one is going to give us that first chance, to believe in us enough to get some experience, how can we ever get any?
Thanks to inspired selection I have just joined the Society of Young Publishers. Hopefully, once my membership goes through, it will get me somewhere. They have a lot of jobs and WORK EXPERIENCE(!) positions posted on the website, with news and other helpful hints. So if anyone else out there is looking to break into Publishing in the UK, I suggest heading on over to that website and seeing how far you get.
Hope is in a shallow grave, maybe they can retrieve it yet...

Nice to find someone who's doing the same as me! I'm looking to get a foot in the door of the publishing industry too, just joined the SYP, proving pretty useful so far, how much did it help you?
I'm Steve by the way, this is my blog http://stevewilliams1.blogspot.com/ leave a comment if you like!
Yeah the SYP has been great, especially with their job alerts system. Unfortunately I haven't been able to make it to any of the events yet, but I am looking forward to my first one.
I managed to get a job that did not appear with the SYP, but they are certainly a helpful resource - just make sure you don't assume their list of vacancies is an exhaustive one! Good luck with breaking into the biz!
